Leading Beyond the Unwritten Rules

Many Black leaders in predominantly white institutions eventually reach a point where what once worked no longer does.

You may find yourself watching less qualified colleagues get promoted while you're told to "be patient." You may be exhausted from navigating microaggressions, managing perceptions, or carrying the burden of being "the only one" in the room. Or perhaps you've achieved success by every external measure and still find yourself asking: What's really required to get where I'm meant to go?

For more than 25 years, Frederick Jefferson has helped leaders navigate that question.

A former Director of the IDEA Center for Inclusive Leadership at the U.S. Department of State and founder of Jefferson Leadership, Frederick has spent his career helping leaders understand how influence, culture, and organizational dynamics shape who advances, who gets heard, and who ultimately has the opportunity to create meaningful change. His work draws from decades of experience in leadership development, organizational change, executive coaching, and his own journey as a Black leader operating within complex environments known as predominantly White institutions.

Through Jefferson Leadership, Frederick works primarily with Black executives and senior leaders navigating high-stakes environments who are seeking to expand their influence, impact, and opportunities without sacrificing who they are. His clients range from emerging senior leaders to C-suite executives committed to advancing their careers while remaining grounded in their values, identity, and purpose.

In this conversation, Frederick will invite participants to explore the realities of leadership that are rarely discussed openly: how decisions get made, how influence is built, how leaders establish credibility, and how to navigate systems that were not originally designed with them in mind.

This ThinkTank is for leaders, change-makers, and professionals who want to move beyond conventional leadership advice and engage in an honest conversation about influence, advancement, and creating change from the inside out.

Start with shared context.

In just a few minutes, we create a common starting point by sharing the backstory, context, and shared challenge at the center of the conversation.

Move through a series of insight rounds.

Through a sequence of fast-paced conversations, you’ll bring your ideas, instincts, and experience into the room—without the pressure of speaking in front of a large audience.

Leave energized and connected.

Walk away with fresh insight, new relationships, and a co-created resource shaped by the people in the room.

HOW IT WORKS

What is the format?

Every PopUpThinkTank follows a carefully designed rhythm.

Not rigid. Not overproduced. Intentional.

In 90 minutes, participants move through a fast-paced sequence of shared context, small-group conversation, reflection, and collaborative thinking — all designed to create momentum without putting people on the spot.

The experience is structured enough to feel safe, but flexible enough for real insight, creativity, and connection to emerge.

Small breakout groups, thoughtful prompts, and tight pacing help conversations move quickly past awkwardness and into genuine engagement. People often tell us the same thing afterward:

“I didn’t expect to feel this energized.”

That’s by design.

Momentum for moments that matter.

30+ Thinkers. 90 Minutes. 100s of Ideas & Connections. 1 Shared Challenge.

Experiences that build communities around entrepreneurs and projects that solve problems and make a difference.
