Participatory Music Creation at Skoola: A Preliminary Evaluation
How do we know when a community arts program is truly changing young people's lives? At Skoola, a community-based urban music academy in Lisbon, young people work with guest facilitators in rotating modules to compose, arrange, and publicly perform original music together. Funded by a CCDR LVT grant through LVT Cultura 2026, a support program for the non-professional cultural sector in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region, this project set out to evaluate how that collaborative music-making shapes students' self-expression, confidence, and sense of belonging.
The research was led by Maria Soyka, a researcher from the United States currently completing her Master's at ISCTE in Lisbon, whose work spans both research and practice as a facilitator, focused on how to bring out the best in a group, from her role as Lead Facilitator for PopUpThinkTank to this evaluation research. She was joined by Madalena Brandão, a local Portuguese research assistant with an anthropological lens toward arts programming, including music, dance, and youth projects. Madalena conducted the student interviews in Portuguese, bringing both local insight and prior experience working with young people in the arts.
Maria will share early insights from the fieldwork, in the students' own words: shyness giving way over time, a place where mistakes are allowed, and facilitators who guide rather than teach. From there, we'll take on a shared challenge:
—> How can participatory arts programs capture and strengthen their impact in ways that are useful to young people, facilitators, and the wider community?
This session is for Skoola's stakeholders and anyone with an interest in facilitation, creative expression, participatory music, and arts programming across Portugal and Europe.
The session will run in both English and Portuguese, and you're welcome to take part in either English or Portuguese.

WHAT TO EXPECT | O QUE ESPERAR
Not a webinar, panel, or pitch. A room that thinks together.
01
Start with a shared question. Comece com uma pergunta em comum.
In a few minutes, we build a common starting point: the context, the tension, and the real question at the center.
Move through fast insight rounds. Explore ideias em rodadas rápidas de troca.
Small breakouts and sharp prompts let you bring your ideas into the room and hear how others think. There’s no pressure to speak in front of the full group.
03
Leave with something of your own. Saia com algo para levar adiante.
Most people walk away with a new perspective, an unexpected insight, or fresh energy. Complete the short follow-up survey and you’ll also get a resource built from the room’s contributions.

HOW IT WORKS
What is the format?
Every PopUpThinkTank follows a carefully designed rhythm. Not rigid. Not overproduced. Intentional.
Shared context, small-group conversation, reflection, and collaborative thinking, paced to build momentum. The structure is tight enough to feel safe and loose enough for real insight to emerge.
Small breakouts and tight pacing get conversations past the awkward part fast. People often tell us the same thing afterward:
“I didn’t expect to feel this energized.”
That’s by design.
Momentum for moments that matter.
Experiences that help people, teams, and organizations get ready to solve problems, navigate change, and move meaningful work forward.
90

Together, we’ll explore something no single person, expert, or AI tool can solve on its own. That takes the pressure off, and frees us to explore, discover, and co-create.
Saving a seat is a small act of generosity: you let others hear how you think, and you’re willing to hear them. Almost everyone leaves with something of their own.
